Wedding Duties: Invitation Design

The rain and the fear that the roads were already flooded on that Saturday afternoon did not stop us from heading over to Printed Matter's concept store in Quezon City. I'm glad we went there since the invites displayed in the bridal fair were conveniently transferred to the store, making it very easy for us to recall which ones we liked.

Just in case you are heading over to the Printed Matter Concept store in QC, they've posted a map online. You can view it through their website
Before going there, we browsed through some sample invites from the web,

we were thinking post card,
we were thinking simple,
we were thinking washed out map background,
semi-rustic...

well...
none of that happened. LOL!

Lily was in charge that day at the store. Unfortunately though, she was the only one there which some 'waiting' that had to happen. She was still assisting another couple when we came in so she told us to look around for a bit and also handed me the binder with their templates so we can choose.

Looking at the display, LJ was still interested with those that have boxes. As for me, I'm leaning towards the accordion-type invites. That way, the guests won't have to worry about loose cards getting lost or dropped. We found a happy compromise for this, so when  Lily approached us, we already had a better idea of the format that we want.

We don't have crazy imaginations (well he does), we are not that artistic, and I'm not going to even claim that we 'know' what we want, but surprisingly, we were able to make quick decisions regarding the invite. We spent the most time deciding on the wordings and what to include. LJ prefers that it's should just be an invite, without the entourage names and sponsor names, just one that told people where to go and what date to go there. I was hesitant to go with that and wanted something a little bit more "traditional." While waiting for Lily, we were able to come to a compromise, so it's all good.

the mess we made
it was already dark when we left,
and raining hard

We were expecting that we would be there for hours, arguing about the contents, but it actually turned out to be quick and painless. Yey! Lily just checked on us every once in a while to tell us what we need to decide on next, starting with the cover, then the contents, which image to use, and the font. We just used our preferences as our compass and everything went smoothly.

Are you about to design your invites? Here are some tips from us...

* Don't over think it.

* If you have a very clear idea of what your invitation will look like, then by all means ask. They know their inventory and can pitch ideas to you.

* Look at the samples, touch and open to get a better idea of what you want and what you don't want. If you are attracted to something, voice it out and include it as a finalist. If your partner doesn't approve yet, just hold on to it, you can discuss the differences later. Who knows? You might find a happy middle.

* To avoid getting overwhelmed, start with the template, then incorporate your colors and background images. Remove and add as you want, just stay true to what you believe is pretty. One by one, it will eventually make sense.

* If it's already too stressful, like you can't decide between baby pink or blush pink, take a break. Breathe... "Keep calm, it's just a wedding" ang peg

As for us, the design itself has been decided on, we just need to provide the 'wordings' of the invite. The ones available didn't exactly fit, since LJ and I made a compromise on what we want inside the invite. None of the existing template matched our needs so we'll just write our own. Again, advantages of being engaged to a writer. hehe!

Wish us luck!
